These Crispy Grain-Free Banana Chocolate Chip Waffles are crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and both gluten-free and dairy-free. They are packed with melty chocolate chips and sweet banana! My kids love these waffles; they are the perfect special breakfast treat (anything with chocolate make an extra special breakfast in our house).

Why You Will Love These Crispy Gluten-Free Waffles

They are made simply with an almond flour and tapioca flour blend and naturally sweet from just a little maple syrup and fresh ripe banana. These waffles can be batched in advance as well if you are into meal-prep, kept in the fridge or freezer, and will crisp up very nicely in an oven or toaster.

I have really been prioritizing non-toxic home products and cookware in our home and have been absolutely loving our GreenPan Elite 4-Square Belgian & Classic Waffle Maker. This waffle maker is AMAZING!

It is completely non-toxic and free of PFAS (I don't want my family consuming those PFAS forever chemicals!) It is made with GreenPan's awesome Ceramic Nonstick coating. What I love the most is that the waffle plates are interchangable and come off. Even more amazing, they can be cleaned in the dishwasher! This waffle maker seriously makes the best crispy on the outside, pillowly on the inside waffles!

Recipe FAQs

Yes, these waffles are naturally gluten-free and dairy-free. They're made with almond flour and tapioca starch instead of traditional wheat flour, and use almond milk and avocado oil rather than dairy. This makes them a great option for those with gluten intolerance or dairy allergies who still want a delicious breakfast treat.

Absolutely! These waffles are perfect for meal prep. You can batch-cook them in advance, then store them in the fridge or freezer. When ready to eat, simply warm them up in a toaster or oven for a fresh, crispy texture. I love to make these on the weekends, then make extra for those busy weekday mornings!

The GreenPan Elite Waffle Maker is our favorite because it is PFAS-free and uses a ceramic nonstick coating. This means no harmful chemicals and easy cleanup, including dishwasher-safe removable plates. Plus, I've found it makes the best crispy on the outside and pillowy-soft inside waffles!, perfect for recipes like these grain-free banana chocolate chip waffles.

No, for best results and to keep them grain-free and fluffy, we recommend sticking to the original ingredients. Check out our Shop My Kitchen Essentials for where to find these recommended gluten-free baking flours.

These waffles have a natural sweetness from ripe bananas and a touch of maple syrup. If you prefer less sweetness, you can reduce or omit the maple syrup. The chocolate chips also add a nice melty sweetness that kids and adults love. This balance makes them a wholesome treat without refined sugars.

Classic toppings include fresh banana slices, extra chocolate chips, and a drizzle of maple syrup. For added indulgence, try dairy or non-dairy whipped cream. Warming syrup in a gravy boat like the Le Creuset Heritage Stoneware Gravy Boat makes pouring easier and adds a lovely touch to your breakfast table.

Yes, these waffles are a hit with kids! The combination of banana and chocolate chips makes them naturally appealing to picky eaters (my kids love these!) Plus, they're grain-free and free from common allergens like gluten and dairy, making them a safe and delicious choice for family breakfasts.

The whole process takes about 15-20 minutes. Mixing the ingredients takes just a few minutes, then letting the batter rest for 5 minutes helps create the perfect texture. Cooking each waffle in the GreenPan Waffle Maker maker usually takes around 3-5 minutes, depending on your machine's heat settings.

How to make these Crispy Grain Free Banana Chocolate Chip Waffles

Step 1: Preheat the Iron

Preheat your waffle iron according to its instructions to ensure it is thoroughly hot. (I highly recommend the GreenPan Elite 4-Square Belgian & Classic Waffle Maker. I used the Belgian setting for this recipe and it worked great. This waffle iron makes the BEST crispy on the outside, pillowy on the inside waffles).

In a large bowl, whisk together the almond flour,  tapioca flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground cinnamon, and salt until completely blended.

  • A large glass mixing bowl containing flour side-by-side next to a small white dish
  • Baking powder, baking soda, and ground cinnamon added directly into the bowl of dry ingredients
  • The dry ingredients for gluten-free waffle batter completely mixed together in a large glass bowl.

Step 2: Mix Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, beat the eggs then whisk in the almond milk, mashed banana, maple syrup, vanilla extract. Add 1/4 cup avocado oil and 1 tsp apple cider vinegar until smooth.

  • eggs whisked with almond milk, mashed banana, maple syrup, vanilla extract
  • Adding 1/4 cup avocado oil to wet ingredients
  • adding 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar to wet ingredients
  • Wet ingredients for Crispy Grain-Free Banana Chocolate Chip Waffles recipe

Combine: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a spatula just until the flour is fully incorporated and no dry spots remain.

  • Pouring the wet mixture into the dry flour ingredients and whisking them together in a green bowl
  • A completely smooth, blended gluten-free and dairy-free waffle batter with a metal whisk resting

Step 3: Rest the Batter and Cook

Let the batter sit for 5 minutes. The tapioca flour will thicken the mix, and the apple cider vinegar will react with the baking soda to create air bubbles (this will give your waffle an amazing fluffy texture). Lightly spray your waffle iron with avocado oil (I used the GreenPan Elite 4-Square Belgian & Classic Waffle Maker). Pour or scoop (I like to use a cookie scoop) the batter onto the hot iron, close it, and cook until the waffle fully stops steaming.

  • A metal cookie scoop or batter scoop held above a bowl of waffle batter
  • Green Pan Elite Waffle Maker with batter and scatted chocolate chips

Step 4: Cool for Crispness and Enjoy

Place the cooked waffles onto a wire cooling rack instead of stacking them on a plate. This allows steam to escape so they stay crisp. Allow them to cool for 1-2 minutes

Add Desired Toppings: Top with fresh banana slices, an extra sprinkle of chocolate chips, a drizzle of maple syrup, or whipped cream (dairy or non-dairy whipped cream both work great depending on your preferences)
